The bazaars of Edirne are the last stop for those returning from this city. Selimiye Arasta, Eski Cami Bedesten, Saraçlar Caddesi Ali Paşa Bazaar and these bazaars are filled with dozens of small shops that cater to every taste and budget. From food to clothing, traditional handicrafts to souvenirs, you can find everything here. Among the most popular products sold on the overflowing counters of these shops are the fragrant fruit soaps that color the markets with all the colors of the rainbow and are known as Edirne's traditional handicrafts. The production history of these soaps, which are known to have come from Edirne, dates back to the 1600s.

Made by mixing musk, amber, and rose essences to achieve the real fruit size and color, these fruity soaps became a valuable gift presented to the Ottoman palace, sultans, and local and foreign dignitaries. They quickly became an important profession in Edirne and due to the priority given to orders from the palace, they began to be called "palace soap," and later "sultan soap" due to the hygiene and gift-giving meticulousness of the sultans. With the increasing demand, fruit soaps became one of the most popular professions in Edirne at the beginning of the 19th century. By the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, there were more than forty shops selling fruit soaps in the Bedesten and Arasta bazaars, and the production of fruit soaps became one of the most important sources of livelihood. It became a symbol of the city's cultural heritage with a neighborhood named "Sabuni".

Try the fragrant fruit soaps and experience the history and traditions of Edirne for yourself!
