Most cows in the region are of the Jersey breed, known for its high β-Carotene content in milk.

The 1887 Trabzon (Tonya) Vilayet Yearbook mentions Tonya's various fruits and products, highlighting the quality of its butter sent to Trabzon, Istanbul, and other places. Industrial production of Tonya Butter began with the establishment of a dairy factory in 1969 in the region, continuing with traditional knowledge passed down through generations. In a competition held on April 26, 2017, in Istanbul, Tonya Butter was selected as the best among 360 types of butter by the Yaşama Dokunanlar Platformu Türkiye Kültür Derneği.
