Selimiye Arasta, Eski Cami Bedesten, Saraçlar Caddesi Ali Paşa Çarşısı, and other markets are filled with dozens of small shops that cater to every taste and budget. You can find everything here, from food to clothing, traditional handicrafts to souvenirs. Among the most popular products sold on the overflowing stalls of these shops are the fruit soaps, known as "mis kokulu meyve sabunları," which add a rainbow of colors to the markets and are considered traditional handicrafts of Edirne. The production history of these soaps, made by mixing musk, amber, and rose essence to achieve the size and color of real fruits, dates back to the 1600s. These fruit soaps became precious gifts presented to the Ottoman palace, sultans, and local and foreign dignitaries. They quickly became an important profession in Edirne and were known as "saray sabunu" (palace soap) due to the priority given to orders from the palace, and "sultan sabunu" (sultan soap) due to the hygiene and gift-giving habits of the sultans.

With increasing demand, fruit soaps became one of the most popular professions in Edirne in the early 19th century. By the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, there were more than forty shops selling fruit soaps in Bedesten and Arasta markets, along with a whole neighborhood named "Sabuni," making soap production one of the most important sources of livelihood and a symbol of the city's cultural heritage.
