The history of these soaps, which are known to have come from Edirne, dates back to the 1600s.
These fruity soaps, made by mixing musk, amber, and rose essences and bringing them to the size and color of real fruit, became a valuable gift presented to the Ottoman palace, sultans, and local and foreign dignitaries. They quickly became an important profession in Edirne and began to be referred to as "palace soap" due to the priority given to orders from the palace and "sultan soap" due to the hygiene and gift-giving meticulousness of the sultans. With increasing demand, fruit soaps became one of the most popular professions in Edirne in the early 19th century. By the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, there were more than 40 shops selling fruit soaps in Bedesten and Arasta markets, and fruit soap making became one of the most important sources of income, with an entire neighborhood named "Sabuni" dedicated to it, becoming a symbol of the city's cultural heritage.
