The markets of Edirne are the last stop for those returning from this city. Selimiye Arasta, Eski Cami Bedesteni, Saraçlar Caddesi Ali Paşa Çarşısı, and these bazaars are full of dozens of small shops that appeal to every taste and budget. You can find everything here, from food to clothing, traditional handicrafts to souvenirs. Among the most popular products sold on the overflowing stalls of these shops are the fragrant fruit soaps, which add color to the markets with all the colors of the rainbow, and are known as Edirne's traditional handicrafts. The production date of these soaps, known to have come from Edirne, dates back to the 1600s. These fruit-shaped soaps, made by mixing musk, amber, and rose essences to bring them to their real fruit size and color, became a valuable gift offered to the Ottoman palace, sultans, and local and foreign dignitaries. They quickly became an important profession in Edirne and were referred to as "palace soap" due to their priority given to orders from the palace, and "sultan soap" due to the hygiene and gift-giving precision of the sultans. With increasing demand, fruit soaps became one of the most popular professions in Edirne in the early 19th century. At the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, with more than forty shops selling fruit soap in Bedesten and Arasta bazaars and an entire neighborhood called "Sabuni", fruit soap making became one of the most important sources of income and a symbol of the city's cultural heritage.

Try the fragrant fruit soaps, experience the history and traditions of Edirne for yourself!
