Product Description and Distinguishing Features:
Antep Oğuzeli Pomegranate is obtained from the Oğuzeli cultivar of Punica granatum L., which is grown in Gaziantep and is distinguished by its slightly flattened corners, square-like shape, yellowish-white grain color and sweetness when it ripens. Unlike other pomegranate varieties, this pomegranate variety, which does not have a sour/tart taste, is traditionally grown in Gaziantep. The pomegranate plant grows well in climates with warm and rainy winters and long, hot and dry summer; fresh growths are damaged by cold in below -10˚C, and main stem below -18˚C. A warm and temperate climate prevails in Gaziantep, with an annual average temperature of 15.5 ˚C and an annual average precipitation of 529 mm. These conditions in the province create properties suitable for pomegranate production. When Antep Oğuzeli Pomegranate ripens, it has the following physical and chemical properties.
Production Method:
- Variety selection: Antep Oğuzeli Pomegranate is produced from the “Oğuzeli” local variety.
- Fertilization: Fertilization is done according to the results of leaf and soil analysis. If there are no signs of nutrient deficiency in pomegranate plants, organic fertilizer is applied to the pomegranates. The farm manure to be given to the pomegranates should be well burned. 2-3 tons of farm manure per decare is applied to cover the whole garden in autumn-winter months and mixed with the soil with a hoe.
- Harvest: Pomegranates reach harvest maturity 5-7 months after full bloom. The pomegranate harvest is done by making cuts on the fruits with scissors, leaving the stems 1-2 mm long.
- Classification: Fruits are classified and graded. This process can be done in the garden or in a certain collection area.
- Storage: The pomegranates harvested in October are put in crates and kept in cool warehouses out of the sun.
