According to records, the Halhali olive, which originated in Derik district of Mardin and is known to have spread from this region to other provinces, is a small-sized and extremely delicious olive variety. Derik has a tradition of olive cultivation dating back to 77 BC and there are centuries-old olive trees in the region.

According to the reports of the workshop organized by Mardin Artuklu University, it is possible to reach detailed information about Derik Halhali olives and Halhali olive oil.

Recently, the popularity of Derik Halhali olives and olive oils has increased and they have become particularly popular products in domestic and foreign markets.

Derik Halhali Olive Oil, which won gold and bronze medals in the International Olive Oil Quality Competition held in Japan and England, has become an internationally recognized and preferred product.

The polyphenol value of Derik Halhalı Olive Oil, which has a low acidity and unique properties, is quite high.

When compared in terms of the amount of oleic acid, which is one of the intrinsic factors affecting the storage life of olive oil, it is observed that Derik Halhalı has the highest value, followed by the Memecik variety and the lowest value is observed in the yellow ulak variety.

With the technical support of Dicle Development Agency and the initiative of Mardin Kızıltepe Commodity Exchange, the application for geographical indication registration of Derik Halhalı Olive Oil to the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office in 2019 was finalized in 2022 and this product received a geographical indication registration certificate.

Producer companies emphasized that this registration certificate is extremely important for Derik olive and olive oil production facilities and Derik district, and stated that the brand value and recognition of Derik Halhalı Olive Oil will increase, and with the geographical indication certificate, halhalı olive oil will become a product that provides more added value.
